Google Read and Write
Google Read & Write works on a Chromebook, laptop, desktop or tablet using the Chrome browsers. It is a Chrome extension that helps to improve the functionality of your browser. Some of the functions that it provides is word prediction, reading aloud, highlighting, dictionary, vocabulary lists etc. The functions will work on almost any web page, Google doc, and PDF.
After installed, Google Read & Write is in your URL bar. It looks like a purple puzzle piece with 'rw' on it. When you click on the purple puzzle piece a toolbar will pull down that provides a number of accessibility features that students can utilize to assist with assignments.
Functions:
Word Prediction: Turning on word prediction will make a drop down menu of “predicted words” appear as the student is writing. If the student can get the first few letters or sounds the extension will predict what the student is trying to spell. Also, the word prediction has a read aloud function for students.
Dictionary: The Dictionary allows students to search the meaning of words as they are reading or writing.
Picture Dictionary: The Picture Dictionary is a support for non-readers. The student highlights an unknown word and clicks on the picture dictionary icon. A picture representation of the word will appear.
Text to Speech: The Text to Speech functions will read text aloud to students. They must highlight the text and utilize play, pause, and stop. To adjust the speed of the reader, click on the settings icon in the upper right hand corner and choose the voice and speed accordingly.
Screenshot Reader: This will allow images with text to be read. You will need to make sure that you have the extensions Screenshot Reader installed. It is beneficial for reading charts and tables online or scanned documents in Google Drive. Students with limited reading skills will have more independence.
Practice Reading Aloud: Allows the student to record reading aloud and send an audio file to his/her teacher.
Speech To Text: Speech to text function allows students to use their voice to write text.
Screen Mask: The Screen Mask helps students focus on limited amounts of text, rather than trying to read the whole text.
Highlighting Tools: The student uses the highlighting tools for various functions. One being to create a list of vocabulary words. Simply highlight the words and click on the list icon. A list will appear.
List Function: Use the list icon to make vocabulary lists from the text. It is a fantastic function for highlighting vocabulary words to study within the text.
Translator Function: For ELL students, the translator function will translate the word into the language that they choose.
Voice Note: Use this feature to insert your voice comments into a document. Comments can be up to one minute. The teacher can add comments to student's work for editing.
Audio Maker: A verbal reading of text. A sophisticated method for nonverbal students to participate in verbal activities.
